Father Joseph Gerard
Joseph Gerard and His Enduring Legacy In Lesotho
With unwavering devotion and a heart full of compassion, Joseph Gerard dedicated his life to the people of Lesotho. After entering the novitiate at the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1851, he was sent to South Africa two years later and was ordained as a priest in 1854.
Over the course of sixty years, he earned a reputation as a man of immense charity and prayer, endearing himself to the Lesotho people whom he served. Even after his death in Basutoland on May 29th, 1914, his grave remained a hallowed spot for the Christians of that nation. His selfless actions and unrelenting spirit were recognised when he was declared Blessed by Pope John Paul II on September 15, 1988.
