‘Come, learn what you are in the eyes of God’

Over the holidays Mazenod College participated in a cricket tournament against Mt Lawley Cricket Club.

Game 1

Mazenod played Mt Lawley Brown at Breckler Park, Dianella. Unfortunately, due to dampness in the pitch, this game was cut to 40 overs per side. Mazenod won the toss and elected to bat first. Mazenod lost two quick wickets but Tyson Cuthbert arrived at number two, to steady the innings with a handy knock of 24. Blake Di Renzo arrived after the fall of the third wicket and made 28 with runs. Regan Hill came in at the next drop and unfortunately falling two runs short of his half-century.  Mazenod finished with a total 159.

With a defendable total on the board, Mazenod opened the bowling with Regan Hill and Matt Harbinson. Four of the Mazenod bowlers took wickets to see Mt Lawley fall 21 runs short of the winning total, losing seven wickets in the innings. Regan Hill finished with 3/23 off eight overs and Toby Boyd Ratcliffe with 2/24 off seven overs.

Man of the match: Regan Hill

Game 2

Mazenod played Mt Lawley Gold in the second (and last) one-day match of the competition. For the second time, Mazenod won the toss and chose to bat on what was a flat deck perfect for batting. Tarquin Mars and Tom Regan put up a respectable opening partnership of 28, until Tarquin Mars was dismissed for 13. Tom Regan played well for 27 until he was caught at cover. The top order then suffered a mini-collapse and Mazenod found themselves at five for 60 after 19 overs. Fortunately, Tyson Cuthbert and Harry Giancono were able to stabilise the innings with an impressive partnership of 89 runs. Tyson made 54 and Harry 34. Regan Hill played a handy captain’s knock with a quick-fire 24. Toby Boyd Ratcliffe at number 11 made 16 important runs to see Mazenod finish with a total of 214.

With the pitch remaining in good condition, Mazenod had to bowl and field well to defend their total. The openers, Matt Harbinson and Toby Boyd Ratcliffe bowled good lines to restrict the opposition’s run rate. Matt finished with 2/19 and Toby with 2/16, both bowling six overs each. Matt also starred with a one-handed screamer of a catch at mid-on, which was taken off Toby’s bowling. The boys displayed great energy in the field throughout the innings, which was evident from three run-outs. Mazenod bowled Mt Lawley Gold out for 107 off 33 overs to achieve a comfortable victory.

Man of the match: Tyson Cuthbert

Player of the competition: Regan Hill
